Sinus Lift
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that involves elevating the Schneiderian membrane (lining of the maxillary sinus) and placing bone graft material between the sinus floor and the alveolar ridge to increase vertical bone height in the posterior maxilla. This is typically done to allow for dental implant placement in areas with insufficient bone due to pneumatization of the sinus or bone resorption.
When a Sinus Lift Is Needed
1. Insufficient Bone Height for Implants
- Bone height is typically reduced due to:
- Natural bone resorption after tooth loss
- Expansion (pneumatization) of the maxillary sinus into the bone space
- Periodontal disease or trauma
If there’s less than ~4–6 mm of bone between the ridge and the sinus floor, a sinus lift is usually required before or during implant placement.
2. Planning for Dental Implants in Upper Back Jaw
- Needed when placing implants in the:
- First and second premolar
- First and second molar areas of the upper jaw
3. Previous Failed Implant Due to Lack of Bone
- If an implant failed because of insufficient bone support, a sinus lift may be performed to regenerate bone before a second attempt.
Goals of a Sinus Lift
Increase vertical bone height in the posterior maxilla
Create a stable foundation for long-lasting dental implants
Prevent implant perforation into the sinus cavity
Bone Graft:
A bone graft is a procedure used to rebuild or strengthen bone in areas where it has been lost or weakened—most commonly in the jaw. It involves placing bone material (either natural or synthetic) in the area to help your body regenerate new, healthy bone tissue.
Why It’s Done:
Bone grafting is often necessary when there isn’t enough bone to support a dental implant or after tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma that has caused the bone to deteriorate.
When It’s Needed:
- Before placing dental implants
- After tooth extraction to preserve the jawbone
- In cases of severe periodontal (gum) disease
- To repair bone loss due to injury or infection
Bone grafts are a crucial step in restoring oral health and ensuring long-term success for implants and other restorative treatments.
